Airports around the world are known for being amongst the
busiest places to visit and Heathrow airport is no exception, with over 66
Million passengers a year passing through this airport it is surprising that
anyone would notice a ghost amongst them.
However
Heathrow has its spectral visitors, the first and most interesting is that of a
man who is thought to have been a passenger on an ill fated flight from Brussels
to London on March 2nd 1948. The Sabena Douglas DC3 Dakota
OO-AWH took off from Evere Airport, Brussels
at 1940 hours on a scheduled flight to London, visibility at Heathrow was down
to 200 yards as fog hung over the area. The aircraft crash landed on runway 2-8-Right killing all three crew members and 17 of the 22 passengers.
During the aftermath of the accident as
Heathrow employees and emergency workers sifted through the wreckage trying to
find survivors a group of men were taken by surprise when a man wearing a has
emerged from the fog and asked them if they had found his briefcase, startled
by this stranger the men just stared at him and to their amazement the
gentleman just vanished in front of their eyes.
According to reports the emergency workers later reported finding the
same gentleman's body amongst the tangled wreckage.
Since that terrible night in 1948 there have
been many reports of sightings of a man wearing a hat being seen along the
runway.
In 1970 there is a report of an incident on
the runway at Heathrow which can not be explained, the radar office reported
picking up a what they described as a person on the runway, the airport police
were despatched to intercept the intruder and they were assisted by the airport
fire department just in case any emergency, the radar office guided the police
officers to the scene of the intruder but the police reported back as not being
able to see anyone, the voice over the radio to the officer at the other end
said that they must be able to see them as they had driven right over the
person. They continued to search for the individual and the radar office
continued to point them in the direction of the person they could see, but
search as they might the officers on the runway could not find who ever it was.
The search was eventually called off. Was this the same gentleman still
searching the runway for his briefcase 22 years later?
There is also reports of another male spirit
which keeps appearing at Heathrow airport, this time he frequents one of the VIP lounges.
This gentleman is reported to be in a grey suit and he simply
materialize at odd moments before suddenly vanishing. Many people have said
they have witnessed this apparition and many have said that he has appeared to
them from the wait down only.
Another
frequent visitor to the airport is one I am a little sceptical about, it is
that of the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin. Through out his short life Dick
Turpin was violent and cruel man who travelled the length and breath of England
rustling cattle and holding up stagecoaches to rob it occupants of their
belongings.
His
luck ran out in 1739 when he was arrested while staying at an inn, on 22ns
March 1979 he was tried and found guilty of two charges of horse theft and
sentenced to death by hanging. The deed was carried out on 7th April 1739 thus bringing about the end of Dick
Turpin's rein of terror.
However
it appears that his death at the gallows in York
in 1739 has not stopped Dick Turpin in his journey around England.
There are many places around the country that report they are haunted by Dick
Turpin, and this is why I am sceptical about many of them, spirits tend to
haunt a location for a reason, maybe it is the location of a traumatic end like
the gentleman on the runway or because they have some unfinished business they
want to take car off or maybe because it was a location that held special
memories for them during their living years.
It is
very possible that Mr Turpin had dealings around the area that the airport now
resides, even so there are many report of a man being seen appearing and just disappearing
in the main terminal, he is reported to be dressed like a highwayman and
wearing a tri-corn hat. Pilots, flight crew and staff at the airport have
reported hearing a man barking or
howling but when they turn around there is nothing there, at other times they
have reported feeling his presence behind them or feeling hot breath on their
neck but no one is behind them.
So if you ever visit or fly in or out of
Heathrow airport and you see a man standing on the runway looking lost and
searching for something or you witness a man in a grey suit appear and vanish
in the VIP lounge or even see a man dressed as a
highwayman wandering around the main terminal, please let us know.
