The haunted side of the UK. Part One.

The Jamaica Inn, Bodmin, Cornwall.

The Jamaica Inn was built in 1750 as a couching inn to give shelter to travellers as
they passed over the remote, windswept and bleak moors using the turnpike between
Launceston and Bodmin. In 1936 the inn was immortalised in Daphne du Mauriers
novel “Jamaica Inn” and three years later in 1939 Alfred Hitchcock made the book
into a film.
The Cornish coast with its stormy waves, rocky coves and sheltered bays made it a haven for smugglers, and once on land you have the vast wild and unmaintained landscape of the moors that made it near impossible to track the smugglers as they moved their contraband around. The story goes that gangs of wreckers would lure the ships to the cost line by using beacon lights which they purposefully installed along the shores of the coast. These beacons would fool the navigators into thinking they were on a different path and would steer their vessels onto the rocky coast. Once the ship was wrecked on the rocks they would be looted by the wreckers.

The inn due to its remote and isolated location made it the perfect place to store away the looted contraband they had taken from the ships, it would be stored there until it
could be taken by many secret routes around the UK.

Reported as being one of the most haunted building in England, the Jamaica Inn has a long
history of ghost sightings and paranormal activity.

Many visitors to the Inn have reported encountering strange occurrences during their visit.

Bedroom Number Four appears to be a room where a lot of activity takes place. Guest who
have stayed in this room have reported waking up in the early hours of the morning to be
startled to see a man standing by the door, they describe the man as wearing old style
clothes, a long cloak and a three corner (Tricorn) hat.

The man lingers at the door for a short while before slowly walking past the foot of the bed
and vanishes into the big wardrobe.

The gentleman in the tricorn hat has also been spotted many times in the bar area of the inn,
he is reported to walk through walls and closed doors, spooking many a guest into downing
their drink pronto and getting out. This spirit is said to be Jack Travellis a notorious smuggler
who was put to death not far away.

Previous managers of the Inn have reported hearing conversations uttered in a foreign tongue,
this would not be so un-nerving had they not been heard while the inn was closed and empty.

Footsteps are often heard in the corridors and on investigation by staff or guests there is no
one around in the corridor.

Cold spots are often reported in the bar areas and in the bedrooms.

Doors open and close on their own and objects mysteriously move places.

However, the most reported sighting is that of a man sitting on the wall outside the inn.
Many people have approached him to say good day but he does not speak or move or
even acknowledge their presence. When they describe the man’s appearance to the staff
at the inn it always has a striking resemblance to a man who went missing from the inn
many years before.
One night many years ago a stranger stood at the bar enjoying a tankard of ale. Upon being summoned outside, he left the half-finished ale and stepped out into the dark night. The man
was never seen alive again. The next morning the man’s corpse was found on the moor, the
manner of his death and the identity of his assailants remain a mystery to this day.

Could it be that the man keeps returning to the inn to finish his ale or maybe he is trying to tell us something about his murder?

Many people working or staying at the inn have reported hearing the sound of horses’ hooves
and cart wheels outside the inn, on investigation of the cause of the sounds there is nothing
there.

The Talbot Hotel, Oundle, Northamptonshire.

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to bump into the ghost of an ex-king or queen, then you should consider staying at the Talbot Hotel.

No one knows for sure when the Talbot Hotel was built, however there is evidence that part
of the building is in fact medieval proven by the medieval timbers that can still be seen today.
The building has been modified several times over the years making it into the majestic
building that stands today. The property was rebuilt in 1826 using stones and fittings from nearby Fotheringhay Castle.

The Talbot was one of the first building in England to be classified as a Grade 1 heritage
property.

The hotel has been made famous by the many sightings of the ghost of a past royal.

Mary Queen of Scots (Mary Stuart) has been seen in different parts of the building over
many years.

There have been many reported sighting of Mary standing at the top of the oak staircase, she is described as wearing a white gown and a white cap and looking very sad and worried.

These reports are very interesting in that the staircase in question was one of the items bought from Fotheringhay Castle when they knocked it down, “So what?” I hear you say, well, Fotheringhay Castle was the last place Mary was kept captive by Elizabeth I, she arrived at the castle on Friday 25th September 1586 and was kept captive within until her execution on Friday 8th February 1587. Not only that, on Thursday 7th February 1587 while standing at the top of these very stairs at the castle the news was delivered to Mary of her execution the following day. This is the very staircase Mary descended on 8 February 1587 for the last time as she made her way to the Great Hall in the castle. Between the hours of nine and ten in the morning she was beheaded.

It is believed that the imprint of a crown, on the dark polished wood of the stairs balustrade was made by ring on Mary’s finger as gripped the rail for support on her way to the block.

Another area Mary has been seen on many occasion is by the stone mullion window at the top of the stairs. She has been witnessed standing at this window from inside the hotel as well as been seen gazing out of the window by people outside in the inner courtyard. This window is also an item that was purchased from Fotheringhay Castle and used in the rebuild of the hotel.

Mary has also been reported to visit certain bedrooms within the hotel, guests have reported
waking in the night to see a figure in the room dressed in a black gown and staring at nothing.

Drumming Well Yard is the passageway that leads from the main street to the rear of the hotel. It takes its name from the well that was once located here, which warned of impending natural disasters by emitting loud drumming noises.

Some of the events that the well was said to have given warning of are,

The fire of London. The deaths of King Charles II, James II and Oliver Cromwell. And many others, the well has long since vanished but the lane is named to commemorate
it.

Secret Nuclear Nuker Photo.

Is this a ghost you can see?

DOES this picture capture the moment that a portal opened to a ghostly dimension – or
is it merely a dirty lens, or a trick of the light?

The snap was taken at a ghost hunting evening at the Secret Nuclear Bunker in Kelvedon
Hall Lane, Kelvedon Hatch, on Friday.
The event, organised by ghost hunting firm Spooksavers, attracted around a dozen souls
all on a quest to uncover some paranormal activity.

Armed with equipment including dowsing sticks, a 'ghost box' to scan through radio
frequencies, electromagnetic field meters and electronic thermometers, the group
descended into the 100ft deep former government hideout.

Yet it was a simple camera which gathered perhaps the strongest piece of evidence of other
worldly goings-on.

Sainsbury's worker Bobby Lockwood from Greenwich captured the image in a computer
room at the underground venue.

"If you look at the top you can see what looks like a portal opening up," he said.

"That's just a normal picture without any tricks or photo-trickery going on."

The man underneath the blurry oddity is the group's medium for the night, former
Psychic TV host Grant Colyer.
Later in the evening the host spontaneously began to run down an unlit corridor before letting out a haunting scream as he appeared to be taken over by the spirit of a former government worker.

"A lot of people go 'oh you've been possessed – you've been taken over' but you're not actually being taken over," he said.

"You're being shadowed by that energy to take on the form of what that person would've been like.

"It does take control of your actions.

"Nothing can leap into your soul but it can shadow us or go over us.
"We are our own spirit energy – we possess our own energy inside us."

Nursery school teacher Sharon Ackland, 54, from Sidcup, in Kent, said she enjoyed the
"thrill" of the hunts.

"It's all about the mystery of the unknown, I don't find it creepy at all," she said.

"I want to know if there's something paranormal out there – so many people don't believe.

"We have an energy or a spirit at the school I work at. A little boy is often seen running
around.

"The children can see him – not all the time but on occasions.

"One of the boys was playing on his own in the conservatory one of the days.

"I asked him what he was doing out there on his own and he said 'I'm not playing alone,
I'm with him."

Spooksavers founder Sarah Oscroft started the company two years ago.

She said: "We did a few ghost tours with a few companies and then we really got into it
and I said let's found our own company.

"There are lots of companies at the moment. It's an enjoyable way to spend an evening.

"You do get a feel for those who are sceptical and those who are more open-minded.

"It can be a much better experience when people are open to the idea of the paranormal."

Could this be real? or just another ghost app fake?

Ghostly figure found on Facebook profile photo.

A New Hampshire man noticed an unexpected guest in one of his friend's Facebook
photos recently. He posted the odd image of his friend and her dog on Reddit last
week.

On August 20, 2013, Daniel Tanner noticed a ghostly figure in one of his friend's
Facebook photos. In the photo, Tanner's friend is seen kneeling with her dog posing
for a photo, and in the reflection of the door behind her, a ghost of a young woman
is seen peering at them.

"My friend has been claiming for months that her house is haunted. Her husband took
this pic a few days ago," Tanner said in the post with the attached image under his
MulberryPlacebo screen name.
According to Tanner, the only people in the house at the time the photo was taken was the woman and her husband.

A few Redditors weighed in with opinions. Most of them thought it was fake or edited. Some thought the figure was a reflection in the glass.

"I believe it's just a reflection, of what, I can't say, could be a living person, could be a statue, could be a painting. In my opinion, this is not paranormal. Rule of thumb is never trust something seen in a mirror or piece of glass. Reflections can be absolutely anything.

If I had to speculate, I'd go with a living person standing to the right of the photographer,"
User Jack Shid said.

One Redditor even analyzed the photo for editing by uploading it to FotoForensics.
According to him the photo is genuine.

"Other than the bar that was put over the friend's eyes, the photo doesn't seem to be
edited. Either it's a reflection or there is indeed a ghost," User Kyranmat posted after he
uploaded the image to FotoForensics.

User Ariandre pointed out that the ghostly woman can still be seen in the inverted image,
only the figure was behind the woman instead of a reflection in the window.

"The creepy thing is the second one you did now makes it look like the girl is in front of
the door instead of a reflection. You can almost make out an outline of her whole body,"
Ariandre said.

An expert photo analyst with over 15 years of experience ran a detailed analysis of the
image.

"In summary, I cannot find any tampering evident in this photograph. Whatever this is, I’m
unable to disprove it. The only other thing I can possibly suggest might be going on in this
picture is a very elaborate projection set up, but even that I don’t believe is the case because
the lighting in the mud room is quite dim. I would expect a projection to cause light glare on
the mirror and there is none. I guess I’m saying I believe this is paranormal," the image expert
said.

Strange occurrences in Tampa Bay Store.

Creepy occurrences in antiques stores have owners wondering about ghosts.

Laura Cheek opened the door to the shop, then immediately froze.

Before locking up the night before, the antiques store co-owner had walked the entire
building, cleaning and shutting off lights.

But on this morning, a half-dozen toys stood in a circle in the shop's foyer. An open book
lay nearby.

"That's strange," Cheek mumbled to no one or nothing in particular. She hopes.

Cheek didn't know it at the time, but for months, vendors and customers had been quietly whispering about strange happenings at the two Antiques & Uniques stores Cheek and her business partner, Kym Eggers, run in Ozona and Palm Harbor.

Unplugged lamps flickered on. Spooked pets refused to enter. There was unexplained foot
shuffling and crashing noises. One customer who was alone when he felt a gentle tap on
his shoulder quietly inquired if someone had died there.

Store workers had chalked it up to customers moving merchandise. Or pranks by
co-workers. Or overactive imaginations. Pure coincidence.

But then customers who had patronized or worked in the two buildings when they were
restaurants started sharing tales of ghostly presences who cleaned and neatly stacked china
on the floor overnight. Ripped a pot from a wall hook, breaking a woman's collarbone.
Sent salt and pepper shakers whizzing across tables. And caused mail to seemingly grow
legs and walk itself inside from the mailbox.

The rumors were an open secret until last month, when customer Cindy Foster approached
the staff.

"Excuse me. This may sound weird, but has anyone ever reported any paranormal
experiences here?" she asked.

It turns out that Foster, an investigator and location scout with the Southern States
Paranormal Research Group, had felt a familiar tingle in her arms when she entered both
Antiques & Uniques stores. To her, the tingle was an indication of paranormal activity.
Cheek and Eggers have accepted the Lakeland-based group's offer to conduct an
investigation in the stores.

"With old buildings and antiques, you're going to get some activity because it has so much
history," said Foster, 47, of Tarpon Springs. "When I come in here, I just feel a lot of good
energy."

To prepare for the investigation, Antiques & Uniques is asking the public to help provide
background information about the buildings.

Workers believe the Palm Harbor store, at 530 Alt. U.S. 19, was built in the early 1930s as
a private residence before it was transformed into a tea house, then a salon. Cheek and
Eggers affectionately call the ghost there "Bertie" or "Birdie," in honor of a woman they
were told was the original owner.

As for the Ozona store at 303 Orange St. N, some think the ghostly presence that seems to
occupy the older portion of that building is a fisherman who ran Hart Seafood out of what
may have doubled as his home. Over the years, workers believe, the building has housed a
bar, a day spa and an Internet eyeglass shipping company.

Leslie Alfred, who operated the Red Roe Restaurant on the Ozona site in the 1990s, said a
previous owner called in a Catholic priest to bless the building.

According to Alfred, Red Roe customers more than once told the only waitress on duty that
someone else had already taken their order. At one point, a team of investigators said they
detected paranormal activity on the property, Alfred said.

A common myth, said Foster of the Southern States Paranormal group, is that investigations
stir up more activity.

"It's a very delicate subject. So many people have paranormal experiences but don't talk
about it," Foster said, adding that Pinellas County's history of Indian burial mounds and
repurposed buildings makes it a hotbed for residual energy. "It takes someone of the same
interests to bring it out."

Store officials know some people may think their story is crazy. And they might agree,
said vendor Carla Gillis, except for things that happen overnight or when employees are
alone — as in Cheek's mysterious toy incident (which, by the way, happened in the same
building where a vendor says a Peter Rabbit children's book appears to move itself around
the room).

They say that if there are ghosts, the spirits have been nothing but nice to them.

But Ozona resident Kim Silver's service animal seems to think otherwise. A docile mutt
named Rainbow, it strained on its leash trying to flee whatever it glimpsed in a dark corner
of the store several months ago.

Last week, Rainbow licked two admirers outside the Ozona store, then calmly let Silver
lead it to the store. But when the door opened, the dog did an immediate about-face.

"She just acts crazy if I try to pull her in. I've never seen her act like that, ever. She's a
service animal, so she goes in everywhere," Silver said, then added: "I don't understand
it myself. I guess we'll find out."
