Objects that are claimed to be Haunted or Possessed. Part Two.

Annabelle Doll.

For the second part in this series of haunted or possessed objects, we once again feature a child’s toy, and again it happens to be a doll.

In 1970 a mother out shopping was looking around a hobby shop trying to find something for her daughter’s Donna’s upcoming birthday. She glanced up a Raggedy Ann Doll that appeared to be quite an antique and she thought it would be something her daughter would like, the lady bought the item and took it home.

Donna at the time was at college and was getting close to graduating with a nurses degree, she lived in a small apartment with a friend, Angie.

The doll was given to Donna on her birthday and she was very pleased with the gift, but thought nothing more of the doll than a sign of affection from her mother. Donna placed the doll on her bed and carried on with her studying and college work.

During the weeks and months that followed Donna’s birthday, she noticed on a few occasions the doll had moved position, at first it was only very subtle movements, she would be seen with her legs crossed but then with them uncrossed, the doll would be found standing up when she was always normally seated. As the weeks went by the doll would be on a different part of the bed that it had been when Donna left the room. Donna quizzed Angie about this, asking if she had been into her room and had been touching or moving her doll, Angie’s denied being in her friends bedroom at all and would swear that she had not touched the doll.

The girls realised something was strange about the doll, when one one occasion both girls were going out for the night, they got ready and Donna closed her bedroom door and the girls left the flat. When they returned from their night out, both girls walked into the living area and stopped dead in their tracks. Annabelle was no longer in Donna’s bedroom where she had been kept since she had been given to her as a birthday gift, the doll was now sitting on the couch in the living room.

The girls first thoughts was that someone had broken into the flat and had placed the doll on the couch as a prank to scare them, they searched the flat but could find no one there nor any signs of a break in.

Things got even stranger when they started to find parchment paper strewn around the flat, then they pieces of parchment paper that had writing on it “Help Me” or “Help Lou”, this started to freak the girls out, they had a friend named Lou who was a frequent visitor to their flat, Lou had never liked the doll, he said there was something wrong about it, something evil.

The doll then started to appear in different parts of the flat on a regular basis.

Donna finally realised that something was seriously wrong when she returned to the flat one night to find Annabelle in her own bed, the doll had what appeared to be blood on her hands. Donna inspected the doll’s hands and she was shocked to see that the red liquid appeared to be coming from the doll itself. Realising that something very strange was taking place in their flat, Donna agreed to bring in a medium.

The girls searched for a medium whom they felt they would be able to trust and finally chose one and arranged for a date for the visit.

The sensitive arrived at the flat and sat down with the Raggedy doll, after a short while the medium told the girls that many years before their apartment block had been built, the land was a field, and it was in this field that the dead body of a young girl aged seven and named Annabelle Higgins had been found. The medium went on to say, the spirit of the young girl still remains, she liked Donna and Angie as she found them to be trustworthy and as such felt safe and wanted to stay with them, once the doll appeared in the flat the young girls spirit had latched onto it.

Both girls were very caring human beings, hence they why both were studying to be nurses. After a short discussion they both decided that they could not cast this poor girls spirit to an existence of loneliness and fear, they agreed that they would allow the girls spirit to remain in the flat.

From that night onward the girl’s lives changed for the worse.

It started with Lou having nightmares about the doll, he would dream that the doll was in his bed and was working its way up his body, he was frozen, unable to move his limbs as the doll moved up over his legs to his chest and finally resting with its hands on his throat, the doll would then press hard around Lou’s throat cutting off his oxygen supply. Lou thought he was going to die in these nightmares but would wake up at the last minute gasping for breath.

Things turned for the worse when Lou was at the flat one day with Donna, they had been talking when they both heard a loud noise coming from Donna’s bedroom, their first instinct was that someone had broken in through the window and was now rummaging through Donna’s belongings.

They both went to the bedroom door and listened, they could hear rusting coming from the other side of the door, they were convinced that someone had gotten into the bedroom, Lou flung open the door and barged into bedroom to confront the intruder, there was nobody else in the room, he stood and looked around in amazement, he was convinced that he had heard someone in the room, he checked the window and it was closed. Even though he could find no one in the room he had the strange feeling that he was being watched, he turned around to make sure nobody was standing behind him and was relieved to see that there was not, however his relief soon turned to terror as he felt a scorching pain coming from his chest, he looked down as he grabbed at his chest and he could see his shirt was covered in blood, filled with fear he fled the bedroom back into the living room where Donna helped him remove his blood stained shirt and used her newly learnt nursing skills to calm him down.

Once Lou had calmed down a little from his attack, Donna and he inspected the marks and cuts on his chest, they resembled marks made by someone clawing at his chest. Lou was convinced that it had been the doll that had attacked him.

Donna had now got to the point where she and Angie were living in constant fear, the attack on Lou had mode both girls realise that they had to do something to remove the spirit of Anabelle from their home before she did something a lot worse, they knew they needed help.

The girls approached an Episcopalian priest and explained what had been happening in their flat since arrival of the doll and they told how Lou had been attacked by unseen claws. The priest listened and once the girls had finished with their story he advised they contact a couple by the name of Lorraine and Ed Warren.

The girls contacted the Warrens and gave them a brief outline of what had been happening and pleaded for their help. The Warrens agreed to visit the girls and see what they could find out.

Lorraine and Ed Warren arrived at the flat as arranged and started to carry out their investigation. After a few hours they all sat down to discuss the Warrens findings, Ed explained what he had identified from his investigation of the flat and the doll. His conclusion was that the flat nor the doll was haunted, there was no ghost present in the flat. However Ed continued, there is a presence of demon in the flat and it had been using the doll to get closer to the girls, he continued that the demon did not possess the doll as demons can only possess people not objects but was using the object to get to its real target, Donna’s soul.

The Warrens called in a priest to bless and cleanse the flat of the evil spirit and Ed asked Donna if he would be able to remove the doll from the flat? Donna agreed, she had had enough of the doll and the evil that attached itself to the toy.

Ed and Lorraine took the doll and placed it into a bag, once they were happy that the priests blessing had made the flat clean from evil, they took the doll and set off on their journey back home.

Ed Warren who was a self-confessed Demonologist knew only too well that the demon that had attached its self to the raggedy doll was very powerful and would not take kindly to being removed from the flat and Donna.

For the journey back home they decided to stay clear of the highways and take the back roads, the journey would take a lot longer but it would be safer if the demon they were transporting was to try and stop them. They were right to make that decision, as they were driving back home the engine of the vehicle started to cut out, splutter and lose power, the power steering kept failing, causing Ed to almost lose control of the car and the breaks would intermittently fail to operate and would not stop the car.

Ed pulled over the vehicle and opened up the bag which contained the doll, he sprinkled in some Holy water, covering the doll and closed up the bag once again. The journey back home from then on was without incident or any mechanical issues.

Once home Ed placed the bag containing the doll next to his desk in his office, where it remained for the next few weeks. Ed that the doll was shifting positions within the bag, each time he entered the office the doll had moved position. Then while working at this desk Ed witnessed the doll and bag levitating a small distance off the ground, this happened a few times but then stopped. A couple of weeks later the Warrens started to find the doll in different rooms within their home, neither admitted to moving the doll, Ed would place the doll back in his office but very soon after it would appear in the living room or in their bedroom.

Lorraine and Ed called in a Catholic priest and requested he carry out an exorcism on the doll to rid the evil demon back to hell, the priest did not appear to take the situation to seriously and said a few verses from the bible and told the toy that it was just a doll and could not hurt anyone. Once finished the priest left the house and headed back home, on the way he was involved in a horrible car accident, he survived but was convinced it was no accident.

Ed knew what he had to do, he built a wooden case and carried out a blessing on it, and he placed the case within his museum off evil and cursed objects that he had collected over the years, he placed the raggedy doll in the wooden case and he sealed it.

To this day the doll which has taken on the name of the spirit of the seven year old girl who was found dead on the grounds of the property where Donna’s flat was many years later built is still encased within this wooden case. Although the doll is still reported to change position within its box, as long as the doll and the demon that wanted Donna’s soul are kept locked within and cannot get out, then it has to bide it’s time until it is free to carry out its evil work once more.
