The Strange Case of The Devils Hoofprints.

The Devils Hoof Prints

On the night of  8th and the morning of 9th February 1855 the south of England experienced a heavy snowfall, much of the southern part of the country had a thick covering of snow .

However the people living in the villages around Southern Devon awoke to something much more disturbing than just the deep snow. When the folks woke up and looked out of their windows or ventured out into the cold snowy streets they found what appeared a track of single file hoof prints.

It is said the hoof-like prints measured around four inches long, three inches across, between eight and sixteen inches apart and mostly in a single file and were witnessed for a distance of approx 100 miles from Exmouth up to Topsham, and across the Exe Estuary to Dawlish and Teignmouth.

What made this event even more strange was that the track of prints did not stop for any obstacle
that may be in its path, the foot prints were seen leading up to the side of  houses, then they appeared on the roofs and continued once the other side of the house was reached, footprints appeared on the tops of snow-covered roofs and high walls which lay in the footprints' path and were witnessed leading up to and over haystacks, many of these items were far to tall for any human to have been able to jump over and walking around them would have left other prints in the snow.  What ever it was that left these hoof prints in the snow could clearly jump from the ground onto the roof of a house.

News about the strange hoof prints spread fast and it was only hours before word was spreading that the devil himself had been through Devonshire looking to collect sinners, fearing for their lives the locals armed themselves the best they could and prepared themselves to fight off whatever it was that had left these off marks.

Over the next couple of nights there were several other reports of similar prints being seen around the country along with reports of sighting of a devil like creature being seen.

Over the years these stranger marks have continued to be seen, most recent in the UK was 5th March 2009 in Woolsery, Devon.

They were seen and photographed in the garden of  Jill Wade. She woke up in the morning and was very intrigued by the marks that had been left in the snow in her back garden  "'I couldn't believe it - the footprints were in the shape of a cloven hoof. There were no other marks at all in the snow. 'I was quite surprised by it and I hadn't got a clue what it was, but I thought I would love to know.'
