London Underground Ghosts - Part Four

Covent Garden Station

Opened on the 11th April 1907 Covent Garden Station is on the Piccadilly line
between Leicester Square and Holborn, the station itself was built on the corner
of Long Acre and James street and is now classified as a grade II listed building.

This station has several reports of the same ghost being seen by different people over the years, however the last know reported sighting was in 1972. Has this spirit finally been put to rest or are we just to busy in our own life and to familiar with our surroundings to notice he is still around?






In 1972 a young lift operator at the station named Christopher Joseph Clifford was
closing up the station for the night after the last train had passed through,he had ensured
the lift was empty and was doing his usual rounds to ensure everything was locked up.

Christopher Clifford went down into the station and a very short while later
was conscious of someone standing behind him, he

turned around and was confronted by a gentleman who was about six foot 3 inches
tall and was wear a very smart old fashioned

suit with a waistcoat and tall hat. Clifford thought he had locked one of the
passengers in the station so apologised to the gentleman and explained he would
have to walk up all the stairs to the exit as the lift was shut down for the night,
Clifford turned around to pick up his keys to let the passenger out of the station,
when he turned around again the gentleman was no longer there, the young lift
operator went to the platform to see if the gentleman had gone to look for a train
but there was no sign of the passenger there, next

he went to the exits to see if he had made his way there in anticipation of Clifford
opening the door to let him out but again there was no sign of the tall gentleman.
Clifford search everywhere he could think someone may be able to go but was not
able to find the man at all.

Chris Clifford reported the sighting to colleagues and was shown an old photograph
of a man and asked if the man he spoke to in the station looked like the man in the
picture, the lift operator replied that it was the spiting image of the man who he had
seen down in the station after he had locked up, he ask who the man was and was
shocked by the reply.

The man Clifford had identified as the man he spoke to in the locked up station was a
well know actor by the name of William Terriss, what shocked him the most was the
news that Terriss had been murdered on the 16th December 1897.

William Terriss was stabbed to death entering the Adelphi Theatre on the Strand,Terriss stopped at the door and reached into his pocket for the keys to unlock the door to the theatre, he was approached by a man who proceeded to plunge a knife into actors back, the actor turned around to face his assailant and was then stabbed a second time, this time in his side, Terriss shocked and in pain spun around and was stabbed a third time, this time again his back. William Terriss died on the spot he had been attacked.

The man who murdered William Terriss was arrested on the spot and was named as actor Richard Archer Prince.

There is a little confusion as to why William Terriss is haunting the Covent Garden tubestation as he was murdered at the Adelphi Theatre which is a fair walk from the now entrance to the tube station, also
Terriss was murdered 10 years before the station was opened, one thought is that the station
was built on an old bakery which William Terriss used to frequent often, is the spirit of
Terriss returning to this location in search of the bakery he once loved while he was alive?

William Terriss is also reported to haunt the theatre where he was stabbed.

The Bear at Stock, haunted after prank went wrong.

Ghostly figure at pub died doing his party trick.

ONE of the most famous ghosts in Essex was that of a man nicknamed Spider,
who worked as an ostler at a pub called The Bear at Stock.

As usual, it's James Wentwoth Day who gives the most vivid picture of the
man.

"'A tiny little man in dirty white breeches, a faded pink hunting coat, black velvet hunting cap, boots and stock.

"He was steady as a hanging judge after 14 pints of beer, lousy as a hedge pig and swore like a Crimean trooper."

His real name was Charlie Marshall.

He had no home or family and lived in the stables at the pub with the stable
cat as his bed warmer.

He became well known in the area for his party trick which was to climb up
the chimney in the tap room; then covered in soot he would reappear down the
chimney of the bar parlour.

He would get a few coppers or a free pint of beer for his trouble. Sometimes, out
of a sense of mischief, he would take his time to reappear and he would stay until
the pub's customers lit a bunch of straw and smoked him out.

His hiding place was probably a bacon loft straddling the two chimneys.

Sadly the joke went too far one Christmas Eve.

He did not seem to want to come down at all.

A bunch of rowdy customers tried to get him down by lighting logs.

He never came. He was suffocated to death.

No body was found.

Later they tried to find that bacon loft.

They pushed a long pole in to test its depth, only to find a large crack
appearing. Panic!

The crack was quickly cemented over in case the building collapsed!

It didn't, but his presence was still there.

Many people since have claimed to have caught a glimpse of a ghostly
figure in boots and white breeches, still teasing his tormentors.

Haunted City Arms Pub in Wells.

Paranormal investigators investigate ghost sightings at Wells pub.

The past is coming back to haunt the City Arms pub in Wells.

Dating from 1649 and formerly the city jail the pub's staff have reported ghostly goings-on, prompting a group of paranormal investigators to see what they could find.

Avon Paranormal Investigators (API) spent the night using electromagnetic field meters and night vision cameras to try to detect any spirit activity.

Dan Lawrence, co-founder of API, said: "We had one of the most active nights we have ever had and we have done quite a few investigations. Some of our equipment we use on investigations was going off the scale, something that doesn't normally happen."



The team included a medium, Mo Sutton, who had a busy evening.

Mo said: "There was a lot of spirit activity and parts of the pub felt cold all the time,
which is sometimes a sign.

"I can see the spirits and communicate with them. In some rooms it felt very, very
heavy."

The spirits encountered included a mother and daughter in Victorian dress. They
went by the names Emily and Isabel and said that they perished during a fire at
the pub.

Not all the spirits were as benign. One was described by Mo as a "black character"
she called the "hangman". When he appeared Mo claimed that people could feel
a noose around their neck and they got the feeling they were not welcome.

The results did not come as a surprise to licensee Penny Lee.

She said: "We've known for a long time that there was something here. We have
had cutlery flying off tables and things move around. I felt a bit uneasy but I
thought let's let them come and see what they can find."

Even Penny's sceptical son Dom was won over by the nights findings.

The team performed a seance and a man appeared to Mo.

She asked the spirit to "touch" Dom who said he felt a cold and highly charged
static force directly behind him.

Dan said: "We didn't aim to scare Dom but I do believe he may now be a bit
more of a believer."

Haunted Wymering Manor handed to volunteers

'Haunted' Wymering Manor in Portsmouth handed to volunteers.

A 16th Century manor house said to be among the UK's "most haunted" has been
handed over to a trust by Portsmouth City Council.

Wymering Manor has been released by the council with a grant of £30,000 to
help towards restoration.

The authority, which owned the building, had said it did not have enough money to carry out repairs.

The Grade II listed house, a favourite with ghosthunters from around the UK, was built around 1581. Youth hostel

Although most of the building dates from the 16th Century, there are still parts that contain Roman and medieval materials.

A manor house on the site was mentioned in the Domesday Book in
1086.

The current building has been a vicarage, home to a Catholic religious order, a
family house and most recently a youth hostel between 1960 and 2006.

It is reputed to be haunted by more than 20 ghosts - including a choir of nuns and
Sir Roderick of Portchester who was murdered outside the manor in the Middle
Ages.

The volunteers of the Wymering Manor Trust are aiming to fully restore the house,
estimated at a total cost of more than £500,000.

The leader of Portsmouth City Council, Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson,
said the handover should ensure a "bright and positive future".

Ghostly chariot rides past Kate Middletons parents new house.

Kate Middleton's parent's new home haunted by a ghostly traveler with royal ties.

Kate Middleton’s parents are in the center of a new ghostly experience which reportedly
has ties to the late Princess Diana. According to the Mirror on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013,
the new home that Kate’s parent’s purchased is in the area that the ghost of Lady
Winchcombe is said to travel past at midnight.

It seems that the late Princess Diana was a descendent of Lady Winchcomb, who
died of a broken heart centuries ago. It is reported that the ghost of Lady Frances
Winchcomb has been seen riding past the Middleton’s new manor in a chariot that
is drawn by six black horses. Lady Winchcombe’s ghost is described as a “lady in
white” who rides on a chariot that is said to be driven by “headless postillions.”

The ancestor of Princess Diana is said to have died of a broken heart after her
husband cheated on her. In October of 1718 Lady Winchcombe died after
starving herself due to the betrayal of the husband she loved. For some reason
she wasn’t buried until December, which spawned the theory that she could
never rest in peace, according to Historian Martin J. Wayland.

Lady Winchcombe’s husband had run off with his mistress three years prior to
her death in 1715 and moved into a French chateau at Marcilly with his new
love the Marquise de Villette. Apparently the ghostly sightings date back to
1898 as Wayland claims he was able to date the reports of Lady Winchcombe’s
ghost riding through the area near the Middleton’s home back to that time.

Did Kate’s parents know that their new 4.7 million pound manor in Bucklebury
came with a midnight haunting of their new son-in-laws ancestor? The chariot
that carries the ghostly apparition is said to give off strange noises as it makes
its midnight rounds. Residents of the area report it sounds as if it is rattling

'House of doom' sees nine die in 15 years

A building in the leafy suburbs of Berlin has been dubbed the house of doom after
it emerged that nine people died unnatural deaths there in the last 15 years. Tabloid
newspaper Bild dug up the details.

A building in the leafy suburb Built just 25 years ago in the Gatow district of Spandau, the large house has been home to a brothel owner who ended up decapitated, the suicide pact of a British journalist and his lover, and the murder-suicide of an entire family.

The most recent was scientist Lorin W., who earlier this month bumped his car into
the vehicle in front at the traffic lights. When the driver rang the police, the Siemens
employee tore off onto the motorway, where he lost control at a speed of 200kph
and died in the crash.

But Lorin W. was not the first to meet his maker in a nasty accident. A brothel owner
who was renting the top floor apartment was decapitated while flying down the
nearby Autobahn on his motorbike in 2003.

Summer 2012 and Berlin police were called to the building's maisonette apartment,
where they found the bodies of 69-year-old Kristian B., his wife Kathrin, 28, and
their two sons aged six and three.

The debt-riddled asset consultant had suffocated them all before killing himself
with a plastic bag. He had previously given up his infant daughter into a baby hatch.

Officers also found the bodies of British journalist John D. and his partner Jörg K,
the pair both had advanced stage AIDS and decided to commit suicide together.

Another suicide rocked the house in 2000, when a Dutch man taped up all of his
doors and windows, lit a barbecue and died shortly after of carbon monoxide
poisoning.

Flight to 1939.

Flight to 1939.

Is time travel possible? There have been many cases reported over the years of

people inexplicably and unwillingly being transported either forward or backward

in time, these people have no idea how or why it has happened to them.

One such case is that of Air Marshal Sir Robert Victor Goddard, there are a few 

strange stories that surround Sir Goddard's life, there is the photograph taken in 

1919 of his squadron in which the face of Freddy Jackson appears looking over 

the shoulder of a man in the photograph, Freddy Jackson had died in an accident 

two days before the photograph was taken, there is also the incident for which the 

film "The night my number came up" is based on, this is the story of  a dream an 

officer had in which Goddard's plane crashes in Japan, the plane did indeed crash 

as the officer had dreamt.

But in 1935 Sir Victor Goddard who at the time was a Wing Commander in the 

British Air Force was flying back to Andover , England from Edinburgh, Scotland, 

he decided to fly over an abandoned airfield at Drem which is not to far form Edinburgh. 

  

The old disused airfield looked battered, its runways were overgrown with foliage, the 

hangers were all falling down and once where planes stood ready for action was now a grazing area for cows.

Having flown over the old airbase Goddard continued on his way back to Andover, 

however not long into the continued flight he encountered a strange storm, he reported 

later that there were high winds and that the storm had strange brown-yellow clouds, the 

storm took him by surprise and he was unable avoid flying into the storm, he lost control 

of his plane which started to spiral towards the ground. Goddard managed to get the plane 

under control narrowly avoiding a crash. Once he got his bearings again he realised that 

they were heading back the way they had come and towards the Drem airfield again, as he approached the old airfield the storm suddenly vanished and Goddard's plane emerged into 

brilliant sunshine.  This time as they flew over the airfield, he noticed how different it 

looked, the hangers that moments before had been falling down now looked brand new, 

there were four planes parked on the ground, three of which he recognised as biplanes but 

the fourth was a monoplane, in 1935 the RAF had not yet acquired  a monoplane, the 

planes were all painted in an unfamiliar yellow, the runways were clear of foliage and he

noticed mechanics dressed in blue overalls walking around, He thought it strange that non 

of the people on the ground appeared to notice him flying over. 

Conscious of his fuel level he 

set course back to Andover, 

but once again encountered 

the strange storm this time 

though he was aware he was 

approaching it and was ready 

for it, he made it through the 

storm without losing control 

of the aircraft and made his 

way safely back to Andover.

So apart from the strange storm and the fact that Goddard witnessed the airfield in full 

operation only moments after he had seen it derelict, there are a few other things that 

stand out that make one wonder if Goddard was privilege to a glimpse of the future 

due to time travel.

It was not until 1939 that the RAF began to paint their planes yellow, acquired their 

first monoplane and kitted the ground mechanics out with blue uniforms.

Goddard had seen the airbase at Drem as it would be four years into the future, Could 

the strange storm somehow have transported Goddard's plane four years to the future 

and then transported him back to 1935?
